Doug Vackoch

top

As the SETI Institute's resident social scientist, Douglas Vakoch leads that organization's work in composing interstellar messages that may some day be sent in reply to a signal from extraterrestrials. His current message-making project describes the evolution of human behavior and morality, with an emphasis on altruism.

In addition to being a clinical psychologist, Doug has formal training in comparative religion as well as the history and philosophy of science. He applies insights from these disciplines to SETI by showing that in the same way that theologians, philosophers, and psychotherapists can expand their views by becoming more open to alternative perspectives, so too might humankind as a whole expand its worldview by receiving messages from extraterrestrials and by composing reply messages.
